What Does Rock Bottom Mean?

“Rock Bottom” is a unique and individual experience from one person to another. This term describes the scenario in which addiction has spiraled so far out of control that it now controls the person’s overall being.

It can be a dire health diagnosis or nearly lethal overdose. It could be the family’s intervention and setting bottom lines until they achieve sobriety.

The prior belief was that users must hit this low point in their lives before they would be sufficiently motivated to achieve real recovery. In the past, experts mistakenly believed that Rock Bottom was the key that unlocked the mystery of healing.

What New Research Finds

Drug Overdose | Rock Bottom Myth | Rehabs Of Armerica | Woman who overdosed having her sister call 911Researchers from the National Louis University’s Community Psychology Program and the Regional Mental Health Center in Chicago, IL challenged the Rock Bottom theory.

They studied 191 adults who were in treatment to document if hitting “rock bottom” guaranteed them a successful recovery. They were astonished by the results.

They revealed that the participants who failed to complete their treatment programs were more likely to be the ones who had experienced a “rock bottom” point. This observation implied that they struggled greater substance abuse problems paired with psychological and socializing problems. In fact, waiting to hit rock bottom decreased their chances both of completing treatment and maintaining long-term sobriety.
