The Dark Side of MMJ in the Sunshine State

It is of great concern to many people in Florida that its state’s voters sanctioned the use of medical marijuana in November 2016 (similar to Colorado), they became the first southern state to pass an amendment legalizing medical marijuana. Moreover, however, Florida is the third-largest market after California and New York to enshrine medical marijuana in the state constitution.

The state would also become among the few states providing physicians substantial preference to recommend marijuana outside of a specific array of diseases.

Namely, on that point, the opponents of the state’s Amendment 2 focused on this point the most; they argue that the measure gives physicians too much leverage. Opponents have even raised about $3.2 million to turn the measure down, mostly with money from Sheldon Adelson, the casino mogul.

However, supporters of Amendment 2 who have raised even more dollars largely with the resources of a like-minded trial attorney, seem to have public opinion in support. Nevertheless, polls have vastly fluctuated. As support is at 57 percent in recent polls, supporters need at least 60 percent to pass a constitutional amendment legalizing medical marijuana.

Troubles with the Proponents of Legalizing Medical Marijuana

John Morgan, the trial attorney, has been a great asset in getting many in the public to support the amendment with over $3.5 million in monetary backing. However, the lawyer is not doing any favors for the campaign lately. Recently, there was a video of a drunken Morgan at a rally about the time of the debate over medical marijuana with the Polk County sheriff. Morgan even told an enthusiastic crowd that he intends to smoke plenty of grass once he is out of the province of the sheriff.

Although Morgan claims he doesn’t support full marijuana legalization, his plea laced with expletives for backers to vote for Amendment 2 seems to have more with increasing marijuana use on the whole than to do with getting medicine for sick individuals. The advocates of Amendment 2 declare that Morgan explained how a family member manages recurring pain with the assistance of marijuana instead of prescription painkillers.
