Recently, light heavyweight UFC champion, Jon Jones, announced that he’s ending his battle with drug addiction and will be entering a drug rehab center. This shocking announcement became news merely days after he defeated his challenger, Daniel Cormier, in a five-round decision in the UFC 182 main event at the MGM Grand Garden. In fact, this victory convinced many to consider Jones the greatest of all time in mixed martial arts.
However, on December 4, 2014, Jones tested positive for the main metabolite in cocaine referred to as benzoylecgonine, during a random drug test by the Nevada Athletic Commission.
The World Anti-Doping Agency code is followed by the Nevada Athletic Commission. Benzoylecgonine happens not to be banned out-of-competition. Thus, as a result, the Nevada Athletic Commission was not able to punish Jon Jones; the commission wasn’t even able to prevent Jones from competing despite the result of the positive test.
The commission had conducted a second test in late December, which Jon Jones passed. Jones willingly decided to enter a drug rehab facility. He not only apologized to his children and fiancée, but he made an apology to his parents and brothers as well. He made additional apologies to the UFC, his coaches and sponsors, as well as all his fans. Jones asked for privacy for himself and his family.
The commission mentioned how they support the decision of Jones to enter a drug treatment center in addressing his recent issue. They admit to being disappointed in the failed random drug test; however, they still applaud the champion fighter for making a mature decision to enter a drug rehab program.
Francisco Aguilar, the chairman of the Nevada commission, announced that the commission plans to discuss at its next meeting out-of-competition drug tests. They plan to discuss whether to break from the WADA code in related situations.
Naturally, the drug test offered to Jon Jones was analyzed for growth factors, anabolic agents, beta-2 agonists, peptide hormones and similar substances, stimulants and narcotics, hormone and masking agents, metabolic modulators and diuretics, glucocorticosteroids and cannabinoids.
The commission commends Jones on his decision; as a result, every fan of Jon Jones and mixed martial arts wishes the fighting icon the best and anticipates his comeback into the sport not only as a recovered addict but as a better man.
